It’s Fall. Breathe – Put your Feet up.

Wow!  Can you believe summer is just about over – in some places it IS over!!  Are you ready for the new school year?

At our center there will be a training on the use of Creative Curriculum and planning activities – and then the part the teachers like the most, seriously – preparing their rooms!  I’ve never seen people so excited about cleaning!  And there is so much to do!

There are new bulletin boards and new toys to put out.  The room arrangement changes and the books of summer are changed out to those “Welcome to School” books.  I remember when I was a teacher I was so excited with the new school year, carefully and thoroughly planning my activities.  I went to the library and checked out a month’s worth of books.  It was so much fun meeting all the new kids and getting to know them.

Then long about February, my steam was gone!!  I’m not at all sure I ever learned to pace myself so my excitement and motivation ran steady all year.

As the fall approaches and we look to another year of touching the lives of children, I challenge you to slow down!  Allow yourself and your class of children to revel in the moment – to be present for the learning.  Don’t plan so many activities that everyone is too exhausted to do them.  Plan some intentional, but whimsical activities and really have fun with them and your small learners.  Pay attention to what the kids say and how they respond.  Learn from their enthusiasm.

And then, at the end of the day, breathe deeply, and then go home and put your feet up awhile.  We can’t do much good for anyone else if we aren’t taking care of ourselves.
